A Simple Summer Schedule
As July is upon us and the days are getting warmer (or colder if you are on the West side of San Francisco!) I am delighted to be celebrating another “end” to our program year. And what a year it has been!! Our normal robust offerings of Worship, Formation, Fellowship, Service, and so much more had to be drastically different due to COVID restrictions. The new opportunities and possibilities in all those areas required quick and creative thinking, and an engagement with technology far beyond what we have done before. I am incredibly proud of all the many and meaningful ways we met the challenges of this past year, and I am also very tired.
Summer is our traditional season to engage in our Sabbath practice as a parish. We traditionally move from offering three services to two, and many of our program year ministries also take a pause, allowing volunteers to rest so they may reengage in the Fall.
This year we will be even more intentional in our Sabbath Rest over the summer. We will be offering one in person service on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. that will also be live streamed. Ministries are welcome to continue over the summer if that is necessary or desired, and if possible, we invite you to take a break, travel if you can, and return refreshed for the Fall. Instead of our summer educational series, we will be focusing our creative attention on preparing for a full return of ministry in the Fall, with a special focus on gathering together in person in as many ways as possible. More details to come!
I will be away for three weeks in July and two weeks in August. Mike Stafford will lead the staff while I am away. I have also encouraged the staff to take their vacation during the summer so that we may all be ready to go come September. While I am away, we have a delightful list of guest priests to preach and preside on Sundays. You will recognize a couple of them, one is new, and another is Mike Stafford’s dad! Here are the dates they will be here:
- July 11, Rev. Lin Knight
- July 18, Rev. Will Stafford
- July 25, Rev. Dr. Paula Nesbitt
- August 8, Rev. Corrie Lassen
Mike Stafford will have the pastoral care phone and will be the primary person to respond to any emergency needs, and he has a list of local clergy who have agreed to be on call should Last Rites be needed. I am so very excited and grateful for Mike’s partnership in the year ahead.
I invite you as well, in any way you can, to take Sabbath Time this summer. In resting we proclaim that God’s goodness sustains and provides. It is a Holy and Healthy act. So please rest, and then get ready, for the wonderful opportunities to regather with one another in the Fall. I am so very grateful for all of you and the community of love and grace called St. Mary’s.
Blessings and Peace,
