The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin
The people of Saint Mary’s seek to live into the Great Commandment
Saturday, December 20, 1:00 PM
Join St. Mary's and the Union Street community in this caroling event. We will meet in the Courtyard at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 20. We will travel down Union Street singing and bringing Christmas cheer to our neighbors, so dress warmly! We'll return to the courtyard for a cup of hot cider and perhaps a few more carols. Please invite friends and neighbors, young and old -- anyone who enjoys singing Christmas carols!
No expertise is required; songbooks with lyrics and music will be provided.
Lessons and Carols for Advent
The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin along with St. Mary's Friends of Music presents this annual musical festival during Advent. Passages of scripture appropriate to the seeason are read and paired with music that enhances and sometimes expounds upon the readings. St. Mary's Children's, Youth, Handbell, and Parish Choirs and a chamber orchestra will present settings of carols by Boris Ord, Elizabeth Poston, Michael Praetorius; as well as the music of G.F. Handel, C.V. Stanford, Felix Mendellsoh-Bartholdy, and some favorite carols. Lessons and Carols takes place Sunday, December 21, at both the 9:00 a.m. and then again at 11:00 a.m. services.
Lessons and Carols allows us to take a break from the holiday rush, listen to beautiful music, and to consider the meaning of Advent and Christmas.
“But you were always a good man of business, Jacob,” said Scrooge. “Business!” cried the Ghost, “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!”
O God, we thank you for the signs of the season – the shorter days and opportunities to think and feel more deeply.
Christmas Eve Pageant
Wednesday, December 24, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Our joyful, chaotic at times, celebration of the coming of Jesus into the world returns with St. Mary’s annual Christmas Eve Pageant, directed this year by John Moore and complete with live animals and a mult-generational cast.
Year End Finance Note
At year end, your contribution to the parish can include more than one purpose, for instance for your pledge and for altar flowers. So it is important to make your intentions clear. We can split contributions for two or more purposes as long as the amount for each purpose is clearly shown on your check. Unless otherwise noted, checks received at Christmas services will be assumed to be Christmas (special) offerings. If you intend such a check to be a pledge payment, please so indicate. All checks received in special Christmas envelopes will also be assumed to be part of the Christmas offering.
The books for December will be held open until January 5, 2015 so that checks dated in 2014 but received late can be posted as 2014 contributions. All checks received after January 5th, regardless of date, and all checks dated 2015 will be recorded as 2015 contributions. As always, we accept appreciated securities as payments for all pledges. Forms are available in the office and by clicking here.
