The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin
As a Denomination PDF Print E-mail

The Episcopal Church in the United States is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion of 70 million people in churches that trace their origins to The Church of England. Anglican, or Episcopal, theology and faith draw equally upon Scripture, historical tradition, and human reason. We seek to find, understand, embrace, be nurtured in, and live out the Good News of God in our daily lives. The clergy and people of St. Mary's hope you find spiritual and emotional sustenance in this tradition.

Lenten Series PDF Print E-mail

The Lenten Series will once again be on Monday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Fowler Hall and we will use the same format as in previous years with a simple soup supper followed by a presentation. This year's series is entitled Living Our Faith: Applying Christian Ethics in Our Daily Lives that will challenge us to explore the implications of applying Christian values in practical situations: including business, environment, health and medicine, and even our relationship as Christians with other religions, with spectacular guest presenters each session. Here is the schedule:

  • Monday, Feb. 27th. The Rev. Dr. Jay Emerson Johnson will begin the Living Our Faith series with a general orientation to what it means to apply Christian ethics in our daily lives.
  • Monday, March 5th. Roni Crews will facilitate a conversation about Unintended Consequences: Christian Ethics and Decisions About the Environment.
  • Monday, March 12th. "Bring in the Clones?" Pioneer bioethicist and former University of San Francisco president Dr. Al Jonsen will lead our exploration of Christian values and bioethics.
  • Monday, March 19th. St. Mary’s parishioner Loren Kieve will lead a session on business ethics titled, Everything I Need to Succeed in Business I Learned in Sunday School

(The Lenten Series will conclude with a Sunday, March 25th. between the 9:00 and 11:00 services with a presentation by Bishop William E. Swing about his United Religious Initiative.)

BACK TO BASICS INQUIRERS’ CLASS

JANUARY 18 – FEBRUARY 8

Have you wanted to know more about the Christian faith you proclaim, but were afraid to ask? Or, are you new to the Christian Church, the Anglican tradition, or St. Mary’s? Do you sometimes wonder at the intent or purpose of certain liturgical practices? Do you question some of the things that are in the Nicene Creed? Do you want to be confirmed into the Episcopal Church? Then join Interim Rector Lin Knight and your fellow inquirers in the four-part program, Back to Basics, beginning Wednesday, January 18th, and running through Wednesday, February 8th.

Each evening, Lin will help us explore one of four central themes of our Christian faith and practice: the Bible, the history of the Christian church, and the Episcopal Prayer Book and Christian belief (theology).  At the last class, Rod Dugliss will leas us in addressing the challenges of living a Christian life. Guests speakers may assist Lin in facilitating our inquiry on some nights.

Including an exchange of thoughts, ideas, and opinions between the facilitator and participants, Back to Basics will increase our knowledge of Christianity, as well as enlighten and deepen our faith commitment. It also will serve as a confirmation class for those wanting to be confirmed into the Episcopal Church.

Again, this is a class for all those who want to be confirmed into the Episcopal Church.  All programs will take place at from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in the Conference Room (copy room) of the Church Offices, unless the size of the group requires that we expand elsewhere.
